Macaroni Kid M-WM Reviews: Spirit Riding Free

By Tiffany Olmstead, Publisher Macaroni Kid Monroe - West Monroe May 5, 2017

Riding a horse has always left me with a sense of improved self-confidence, independence, and stress relief. When I heard there was an opportunity to preview the DreamWorks animation, Spirit Riding Free, I was so excited. I had remembered Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron in 2002 and was thrilled to share Spirit's adventures with my kids.

Last weekend, a few friends came to our home to preview the Netflix original series DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free, premiering on Netflix Friday, May 5, 2017. My husband, son and I watched the first episode the night before and knew it was something special when Keith stated “that’s a really cute show” and my son loved it, regardless of the main characters being girls. Positive messages are evident throughout the opening theme song, storyline, and appearance. The first episode focused on introduction of characters and making connections in a new community. During the second episode, there was a focus to not give up on your goals and dreams. It's been awhile since I have really liked an animated show and I am excited about this series.

During the party, our friends enjoyed horse-themed snacks such as as carrots, apples, hay (pretzels), lassos (red licorice), hay bales (rice cereal treats) and more. We gathered lots of horse-themed party ideas on our Pinterest page. Families received movie posters, sample books, bandannas and tote bags from our party sponsor Netflix. The kids also painted their own original horse as they arrived. See more photos in our Facebook album!

After both 23 minute episodes were shown, the kids (and adults) all said how much they loved it and can't wait to see more episodes.  DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free follows three friends, who together experience coming of age and the power of friendship. Lucky, a gutsy 12-year-old girl, befriends a wild mustang she names Spirit. With her two best friends, Abigail and Pru, and their horses by her side, they explore a world filled with endless rides and never ending fun. Together they’ll push their own limits and discover what it truly means to be free.

A coming of age series, inspired by DreamWorks’ Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Spirit Riding Free brings to life three smart, empowered and relatable main characters, Lucky, Pru and Abigail. From major events like flash floods and blizzards, trainer robbers and banditos, treasure hunts and secret sleepovers, executive producer Aury Wallington (“Sex in the City,” “Veronica Mars” and “Heroes”) has created a world filled strong characters who defy stereotypes and mirror positive images of young viewers on screen.

Reviews from attendees:

“It had a good message in each episode, but entertaining too. My daughter, age 7,  liked Pru best and my son, also age 7, said his favorite character is Spirit. I certainly would recommend it others and we will be watching."

"We really enjoyed the show. We will definitely be watching the series and sharing with friends."

"I love Spirit! I like how the girls do things together and Spirit helps."

"The show Spirit was adorable and had a great message. We really enjoyed it."

Watch the trailer below and remember to watch on Netflix starting May 5, 2017.
