Explore the Countryside on Horseback at Oak Hollow Farm

By Tiffany Olmstead, Publisher, Macaroni Kid Monroe - West Monroe July 19, 2018

There is a unique and relaxing feeling while riding a horse, a sense of peace and freedom.   For me, I love being on the horse, listening to sounds of nature and allowing my mind to wander.  As you drive up to 300 acres of Oak Hollow Farm, the first thing you will notice is the beautiful barn.  It is not uncommon to find the barn recently decorated for a wedding, family reunion, and corporate events.

My husband is not a "country boy" but he was impressed by the barn. We enjoyed a game of Jenga and horseshoes while we waited for the entire group to arrive.  There is also a playground, wooden swing, and benches near the barn to enjoy.  If horseback riding is not something you like, you may choose other activities available at Oak Hollow Farm including skeet shooting and seasonal pheasant hunting.

Once your group and leaders are ready, you are taken to the horse stable via a tractor-pulled hay ride.  Oak Hollow Farm has over 30 trained horses ranging from ages 4 - 30 years.  At the stable, horses are saddled up and ready to meet you. Our leaders, Laina, Julia, and Allie, were very professional, knowledgeable and friendly.  We rode with a group of 18 and several were first-time riders.

The horses begin your journey out of the barn following wooded trails and along ponds, creek banks and pastures of the Oak Hollow land.

Huge oak trees line much of the trail along with open pastures.  As we entered Oak Alley, my daughter described it as almost magical with its canopied path. During the night, they are shining bright providing stunning photo backdrops for weddings and events. When your journey ends back at the horse stable, treats are available for you to feed your horse.

Both of my kids, age 10 and 13, stated horseback riding at Oak Hollow Farm was the best adventure while visiting the Gulf Shores, Alabama area and a good break from the beach.  This activity provided a special family experience, yet also individual memories. The entire family was off electronics and absorbing the sights and sounds of nature. Riding gave me a sense of mindfulness and peace as we meandered through the countryside.  If you are in the Gulf Shores area, add horseback riding at Oak Hollow Farm on your list of things to do. Professionally guided trail rides are offered by appointment 6 days a week and can accommodate any size group from just 1-2 riders to larger groups of 20-25.  Reservations are preferred and simple to do on their website.

Tips for your visit: Wear closed toe shoes and bring another pair of clothes and shoes because the trails can get dusty or muddy depending on recent weather.
