By Stuart Hodnett, Ouachita Green Director February 6, 2020

WEST MONROE, LA (February 6, 2020) – This Mardi Gras season, Ouachita Green is encouraging Mardi Gras revelers to be responsible for their waste. The campaign, named “Krewe of Klean,” involves a community clean-up effort the day after both parades as well as increasing public awareness regarding litter left behind after the parades.

The public is encouraged to clean their parade viewing areas before leaving. Items such as beads, cups, aluminum cans, food bags, and glass bottles should be disposed of properly. In addition, people can place unwanted Mardi Gras beads and throws in a bin located in Alley Park in Downtown West Monroe from Saturday, February 8 through Wednesday, February 19.

The West Monroe Recycling Center will also be accepting items for drop-off during normal business hours Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The free drop-off facility is located behind the West Monroe Police Department and is open to the general public.

Two community clean-ups will be hosted in which volunteers are invited to help pick up trash left on the parade routes. King cake will be provided before the clean-ups which are scheduled for the following dates:

  • Krewe de Riviere Clean-Up: Sunday, February 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers will gather in front of the West Monroe High School stadium.
  • Krewe of Janus Clean-Up: Sunday, February 16 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers will gather in Alley Park in downtown West Monroe.
