Deep within the world’s seas and oceans is an area called the abyssal zone. It lies more than 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) below the surface of the water. It is dark there, and the water is almost motionless.  Yet even in these conditions, various forms of life survive. These range from tiny microorganisms to more complex animals such as fish and crustaceans.

Let's learn about some of the cool creatures that live in the seas and oceans!

As you go further down, you will find animal life that has adapted (changed), to survive the harsh conditions. The further down you go the water gets very cold, it is completely dark, and there is powerful pressure from the water. In these conditions, animal life has adapted in very unusual ways. For example, the Angler Fish can produce its own light. This is called bio-luminescence.

Let's enjoy some fun facts and then answer the question, how deep is the sea?

  • Around 97% of all water is in the oceans and they cover around 71% of Earth’s surface.
  • Pacific Ocean is the biggest one.
  • You can find mountains and volcanoes on the bottom of oceans.
  • The deepest point in the ocean is the Mariana Trench.
  • Oceanic evaporation is the source of most rainfall.
  • Ocean temperatures determine climate.
  • Earth is the only known planet that has oceans (as far as we know for now).
  • The biggest animal in the ocean is the blue whale.
  • We have explored less than 5% of the ocean (to date).
