Teaching children about Memorial Day is important for their education, character development, and understanding of our nation's history and values. By passing on this knowledge to the next generation, we can ensure that the sacrifices made by our military heroes will never be forgotten.

One way to teach and pay tribute to these heroes is by visiting a military museum in your area. In North Louisiana, there are two great museums worth visiting: the Chennault Military and Aviation Museum in Monroe, LA, and the North Louisiana Military Museum in Ruston, LA.

The Chennault Military and Aviation Museum is located near the Monroe Regional Airport and is dedicated to preserving the history of General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers, a group of American volunteer pilots who fought in China during World War II. The museum features a collection of artifacts, exhibits, and aircraft from the era, including a P-40 Warhawk, the iconic plane flown by the Flying Tigers.

Visitors can also learn about the history of Barksdale Air Force Base and the role it played in World War II and beyond. The museum is a great place to learn about the bravery and sacrifice of our military heroes and to gain a deeper appreciation for their service. (Hours of operation are: Tuesday-Saturday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm)

The North Louisiana Military Museum in Ruston, LA, is another great option for those interested in military history. The museum features exhibits and artifacts from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War. Visitors can see everything from weapons and uniforms to photographs and letters from soldiers.

One of the highlights of the museum is the display of military vehicles, including jeeps, trucks, and tanks. The museum also features a research library for those interested in digging deeper into military history. (Hours of operation are: Wednesday 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm and Thursday - Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm)

Both museums offer a great opportunity to learn about the sacrifices made by our military heroes and to honor their memory on Memorial Day. In addition to visiting the museums, you can also support their efforts by making a donation. Both museums are non-profit organizations that rely on donations to continue their important work.
