The first few weeks of a new school year can feel like a whirlwind. Between finding backpacks, meeting new teachers, packing lunches, and getting everyone out the door on time, it's easy to feel like you're sprinting before the school year has even begun. At Macaroni KID Monroe–West Monroe, we know parents are juggling a lot, and we're here to help make life just a little easier. One of the best gifts you can give your child—and yourself—is a good night's sleep. A simple bedtime reset now can lead to smoother mornings, happier kids, and a less stressful start to the school year.
Start Small
If bedtime drifted a little later over the summer (you're definitely not alone!), don't worry. Begin moving bedtime earlier by 15–20 minutes every few nights. The same goes for wake-up time. Small changes are much easier than an overnight adjustment.
Create a Relaxing Routine
Kids thrive on routines. About 30 minutes before bed, slow things down with activities like:
- Reading together
- Taking a warm bath
- Listening to calming music
- Talking about the best part of the day
These simple moments help children know it's time to wind down.
Give Screens an Earlier Bedtime
Phones, tablets, TVs, and gaming systems can make it harder to fall asleep. Try making the last hour before bedtime a screen-free zone. It's a great opportunity to reconnect as a family, too.
Make Bedtime Cozy
A cool, dark, and quiet room helps children sleep better. Favorite blankets, stuffed animals, or a soft nightlight can make bedtime feel comforting, especially for younger children.
Play Hard, Sleep Well
Outdoor play, sports, bike rides, or simply running around the backyard help children burn energy and sleep more soundly at night.
Watch the Afternoon Drinks
Skip sodas and energy drinks later in the day. Water and milk are much better choices to help little bodies settle down at bedtime.
Keep Mornings Consistent
Sleeping until noon on the weekend may sound tempting, but keeping wake-up times fairly consistent helps everyone's body adjust to the school routine.
Talk About Why Sleep Matters
Help children understand that sleep isn't just about bedtime—it helps them:
- Pay attention in class
- Learn new things
- Handle emotions
- Have energy for sports, clubs, and after-school fun
Parents Count Too!
This transition isn't just for the kids. Give yourself a little grace as everyone adjusts to new schedules. Even if every morning isn't picture-perfect, each day gets a little easier as new routines become habits.
Here's to a wonderful school year! From all of us at Macaroni KID Monroe–West Monroe, we're cheering you on every step of the way. We'll keep bringing you family-friendly events, local resources, and ideas to help your family make the most of every season—because making memories doesn't stop when school starts!
