We've Included the Scoop on this Year's Summer Camps!

Congratulations to the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo on their 100th Birthday! This incredible milestone is a testament to the zoo's commitment to families in our community. We were so excited by this landmark celebration that Rickey Robertson, Macaroni KID MWM publisher, decided to take a tour on May 30th, 2024. Let's just say, we were wowed! Here's to a century of making memories and to many more years of inspiring wonder and respect for the natural world.

The biggest project going on right now is the Louisiana Purchase Exhibit. It’s being called the “swamp exhibit” by some because it will house several wet wildlife habitats including the new albino alligator exhibit, as well as some small gators, larger gators, beavers, otters, and turtles. Of course, they aren’t all in the same exhibit! They’ll be split into six different “pool” exhibits that resemble a swamp scene complete with a little swamp shack in the middle. Pipes are in place and the earth is moving. We’re not 100% sure of the estimated completion, but we know it will be swamptacular!

Next, we moved to the big cats where we visited the lions Sophia & Rocco (who were quite active), Cairo the mountain lion (I think I spelled that right), and Malia the Tiger who has only been on site since early December. She seems to be enjoying her new spot. We also talked to the Poncho the water buffalo, who gave us a BIG smile.

We checked in with the sloths (who have some announcements coming, so stay tuned) and the White-Handed Gibbon sisters, Vanna and Betty White. They are precious! They love showing off for you.

The zoo has some new faces coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled to see what’s coming up. There is just so much going on out there. The “kitchen garden” that supplies food for the animals and is on the property, Zoo Summer Camps, the Budgie Encounter, the Louisiana Purchase Exhibit, the Tortoise Encounter, and MORE.

During the tour, we asked the acting zoo director Phillip Crawley how he felt about things, and he replied, “We are excited about the community support for everything going on at the zoo. Our expansion, new exhibits, and attendance growth. We can’t thank our community enough.”

With such a rich array of activities and unique experiences, the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo offers something for everyone. From the delightful train and boat rides to the engaging summer camp programs, there are endless adventures for families and friends to enjoy. The Zoo Oasis splash pad, open from May 30th to September 30th, provides a refreshing break from the Louisiana heat, making it a perfect spot for some summer fun.

Don't miss the opportunity to feed a tortoise and chat with one of the knowledgeable zookeepers who are always eager to share their insights and passion for the animals they care for. These personal interactions and hands-on experiences make every visit to the zoo memorable and educational.

Join us in celebrating the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo's milestone 100th birthday. It's a century of dedication to wildlife conservation, education, and community engagement. Plan your visit today and become part of this incredible legacy. Happy exploring!
