On Juneteenth, we have the privilege of honoring Mrs. Rotena H. Russell who recently received a Juneteenth Community Recognition Award, recognizing her unwavering loyalty and dedication during the civil rights movement and her significant contributions to the education of young minds. Mrs. Russell's journey is a testament to resilience, commitment, and the power of education in driving social change.

Mrs. Russell's path intersected with that of Reverend John Louis Russell, who, after serving in the U.S. Army, became a teacher at Alto and Mangham High Schools in Richland Parish. The couple's shared commitment to education brought them together at Alto High School, where John taught English and Rotena taught math and science. In a telling moment of her visionary spirit, Rotena requested to switch classrooms with John so she could convert his larger room into a science lab, a decision that symbolizes her innovative approach to teaching. Their partnership, forged in the halls of education, culminated in their marriage on January 6, 1963. Over the years, they raised two sons and a niece while continuously contributing to their community by holding meetings in their living room, running churches, and organizing non-violent protests.
Mrs. Russell's pioneering efforts extended beyond her marriage and family life. She broke barriers by becoming the first Black math teacher at West Monroe High School, paving the way for future generations of educators and students. Even today, she remains a community pillar, attending New Greater Antioch Baptist Church in Monroe, LA, where her son, John L. Russell II, serves as pastor. Her life and work embody the spirit of Juneteenth—a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality.
