Educational Snacks Your Kids Will Love!

Simple recipes that will help your kids brush up and their math skills.

This summer, keep your kids entertained and intellectually engaged with some simple, delightful recipes that double as math lessons! From measuring ingredients to timing their culinary creations, these recipes provide a fun and tasty way for children to brush up on their math skills. Whether they’re practicing fractions by halving a recipe or learning about measurements with cups and teaspoons, these hands-on activities make math both practical and enjoyable. Not only will your little chefs whip up delicious treats, but they’ll also gain confidence and competence in their math abilities, all while creating happy memories in the kitchen.

1. Fruit and Cheese Kabobs

Ingredients:

  • A variety of fruits (e.g., strawberries, grapes, pineapple chunks, and apple slices)
  • Cheese cubes
  • Wooden skewers

Math Concepts:

  • Counting: Count the number of fruits and cheese pieces.
  • Fractions: Cut fruits into halves or quarters.
  • Patterns: Create patterns by alternating fruit and cheese pieces.

Instructions:

  1. Let the kids pick a certain number of each type of fruit and cheese.
  2. Ask them to create a pattern on the skewer (e.g., fruit, cheese, fruit, cheese).
  3. Discuss the patterns and count the total number of each ingredient.

2. Peanut Butter and Banana Wraps

Ingredients:

  • Tortillas
  • Peanut butter
  • Bananas

Math Concepts:

  • Measurements: Measure the length of the bananas and the diameter of the tortillas.
  • Geometry: Discuss the shapes involved (circle for the tortilla, cylinder for the banana).

Instructions:

  1. Spread peanut butter evenly over the tortilla.
  2. Place the banana on one edge and roll the tortilla around it.
  3. Cut the wrap into equal sections and discuss the fractions of the whole wrap.

3. Veggie Faces on Crackers

Ingredients:

  • Crackers
  • Cream cheese or hummus
  • Various veggies (e.g., cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, bell pepper strips, olives)

Math Concepts:

  • Shapes: Identify the shapes of the veggies.
  • Symmetry: Create symmetrical faces on the crackers.

Instructions:

  1. Spread cream cheese or hummus on the crackers.
  2. Let the kids use the veggies to create faces on the crackers.
  3. Discuss the shapes and symmetry of their creations.

4. Yogurt Parfaits

Ingredients:

  • Yogurt
  • Granola
  • Mixed berries

Math Concepts:

  • Layering: Discuss the concept of layers and how to evenly distribute ingredients.
  • Ratios: Determine the ratio of yogurt to granola to berries.

Instructions:

  1. Have the kids spoon a layer of yogurt into a cup.
  2. Add a layer of granola followed by a layer of berries.
  3. Repeat the layers and discuss the proportions used.

5. Trail Mix

Ingredients:

  • Nuts
  • Dried fruit
  • Pretzels
  • Chocolate chips

Math Concepts:

  • Counting: Count the number of each ingredient.
  • Addition and Subtraction: Add and subtract ingredients to reach a desired total.

Instructions:

  1. Provide each child with a small cup or bowl.
  2. Let them choose a specific number of each ingredient to add to their trail mix.
  3. Discuss the total number of items and the process of combining different amounts.
