Kent School Students Return to Monroe with Cutting-Edge VR Technology

Chennault Aviation & Military Museum Simulates the Historic Route of the Flying Tiger Pilots

During World War II, the United States and China forged a robust relationship through the courageous efforts of General Claire Lee Chennault and his renowned Flying Tigers, who defended China against Japanese forces. Fast forward 80 years, and a new, exciting partnership is blossoming between Chinese high school students and the Monroe, LA community. This modern alliance promises to bring enriching opportunities and foster international camaraderie in Northeast Louisiana.

In 2020, students from The Kent School in Connecticut initiated a heartwarming project to assemble and distribute 100 bicycles to underprivileged children in Monroe. This effort, part of the US-Sino Youth Initiative, began with three students and quickly expanded to 13 students from three countries and four U.S. states. The program, aptly named "Love Without Borders," flourished in 2022, when another group of Kent School students traveled to Monroe. They assembled a flight simulator, taught classes at the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum, and hosted a competition with a brand-new iPad as the prize. This initiative provided educational benefits and promoted cultural exchanges and mutual understanding.

In 2024, the Kent School students are set to return to Monroe with another remarkable contribution—a cutting-edge virtual reality (VR) flight simulator, complete with multiple sets of VR goggles programmed by the students. This simulator, built in Germany, will be assembled at the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum and will simulate the historic route of the Flying Tiger pilots over the Hengduan Mountains, famously known as "The Hump." Nell Calloway, President & CEO of the Museum and granddaughter of General Claire Lee Chennault, praised the program for its educational value and cultural exchange opportunities. The museum is seeking 20 local high school students to participate in this enriching camp from August 10th to 12th.
