MONROE, LA—January is recognized as Human Trafficking Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on the realities of human trafficking and to raise awareness of the widespread issue that affects individuals in our communities. “Human trafficking is the crime of using force, fraud, or coercion to compel a person into commercial sexual activity or labor services against their will,” said Lauren Laughlin, Regional Care Coordinator with The Children’s Advocacy Center in Monroe, LA. “This crime continues to impact vulnerable populations, including children, teens, and adults, with devastating consequences,” explained Laughlin.
In Louisiana, human trafficking is an alarming problem. According to the Governor’s Office of Human Trafficking Prevention, 1,743 victims received services in 2023. The state is a known hotspot for trafficking due to its large network of highways, busy ports, and transient workforce. Victims of trafficking may come from any background and can be manipulated or coerced into situations where their basic rights and freedoms are stripped away. This includes children who may be exploited for sex, forced labor, or other forms of abuse. Tragically, trafficking is often hidden in plain sight, making it difficult for many to recognize the signs and take action. That’s why the CAC is working to raise awareness about how to identify trafficking and what can be done about it.
The Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) is dedicated to providing vital services and education that offer hope and healing to victims of trafficking. “In 2024, we provided services to 83 confirmed and suspected victims of trafficking in northeast Louisiana,” said Laughlin. Through trauma-informed care, the CAC offers a safe space for victims to begin their recovery journey. Services include community-based training, forensic interviews, medical evaluations, case management, and counseling. The CAC team works closely with law enforcement, Child Protection Services, and other agencies to ensure that victims receive the care, attention, and legal support they deserve.
“At The Center for Children & Families, we are committed to supporting families in need of hope through a range of services, including advocacy, counseling, education, and prevention efforts,” explained Chris Ramsey, Chief Operating Officer. “We offer counseling for individuals and families affected by trauma, including those impacted by trafficking. Our education programs provide essential information on how to recognize the signs of trafficking and how to protect children and vulnerable individuals from exploitation. Through prevention initiatives, we aim to equip communities with the knowledge to reduce the risk of trafficking and create a safer environment for all.”
The Center encourages local businesses, churches, schools, and organizations to play a role in the fight against human trafficking. You can help by hosting a free training session for your staff, members, or students to learn about human trafficking and how to recognize the signs. The CAC trained 557 community members in 2024 and plans to increase that number in 2025.
Donations are also welcome to support the ongoing work of The Center for Children & Families and the Children’s Advocacy Center in providing critical services to victims. Every contribution helps further its mission to prevent human trafficking and offer healing to those affected.
“Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those who have been trafficked and work toward a future where every child and adult is safe from exploitation,” said Laughlin.
