UNO is already a family favorite, but what if you could turn it into a game that gets kids excited about reading too? Enter Reading UNO—a clever twist that combines card play with page-turning fun. Whether you’re tackling a chapter book, picture book, or even a stack of short stories, this version makes reading feel like a game-night win.
What You’ll Need:
- A deck of UNO cards (or two if you’ve got a big group).
- A book (or several) that everyone agrees to read from.
- Willing players ready to mix stories with strategy.
How to Play:
- Deal & Read
Set up UNO as usual. Each player gets 7 cards. On your turn, before you play or draw, you must read one page aloud (or quietly, depending on your house rules). - Play or Draw
After reading, you play a card that matches the color or number on the discard pile. Can’t play? Draw a card—just like regular UNO. - Special Cards with a Reading Twist
Here’s where the magic happens:- Skip → The next player loses their turn and must read one extra page.
- Reverse → Switches play direction and sends one bonus page back to the previous player.
- Draw 2 → The next player reads two extra pages before taking their turn.
- Wild Draw 4 → Ouch! That’s four extra pages for the next player.
- Wild → The player who lays it down gets to choose the next book or story for the group!
- Winning
When you’re down to your last card, don’t forget to shout “UNO!” Finish the game as usual, but here’s the twist: the winner gets to close out the session by reading the final paragraph or page of the book.
Why It Works
Even reluctant readers enjoy this game, because the reading feels tied to the excitement of the cards. My grandson was thrilled when he got to play a Draw Four—not only did he get a big card advantage, but he also sent four extra pages to his opponent. We made it through three chapters in one sitting and laughed the whole way through.
Reading UNO sneaks in extra literacy without feeling like homework. Kids are motivated to keep turning pages because they’re having fun with the game, and the special cards keep everyone on their toes. It’s the perfect way to bring books to life on family game night!
So grab a deck, pick a book, and let the stories unfold—one card and one page at a time. πͺππ
