Lighting Up Learning at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo

City of Monroe Proclaims Oct. 21st Lights On! Afterschool Day!

By Missy Robertson, Publisher, Macaroni KID Monroe-West Monroe October 24, 2025

Recently, Macaroni KID Monroe–West Monroe had the absolute joy of joining hundreds of smiling faces at the Lights On! Afterschool celebration at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo—and what a bright and beautiful day it was!

More than 500 children from 21st Century Afterschool Programs came together to explore 10 fun-filled activity stations, each designed to highlight the creativity, learning, and community spirit that make afterschool programs so vital.

Macaroni KID Monroe-West Monroe volunteered at a station, kids wrote special messages about why they love their afterschool program—and their answers warmed our hearts. The most popular message?
💛 “I love my teachers and learning!”

And let’s talk about community teamwork! The Monroe Moccasins Hockey Team had a huge presence at the event, with team members helping lead activities and even joining groups of children as they rotated through the stations. It was so fun watching these athletes laugh, play, and connect with the kids—they brought the same energy and teamwork they show on the ice right into the zoo!

The fun didn’t stop there—the Bayou State Rougarou Youth Hockey League joined in, too, lending their helping hands and big smiles to make the day even more special. (More about them soon!)

The celebration wrapped up with a powerful moment: DJ Fortenberry read a proclamation from the City of Monroe, officially declaring October 21st Light's On! Afterschool Day to recognize the importance of afterschool programs. Cue the cheers and confetti! 🎉

Hosted by the Louisiana Center for Afterschool Learning, a program of the Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana, this event shone a spotlight on how afterschool programs nurture minds, inspire curiosity, and provide a safe, supportive space for kids to grow.

We’re so proud to be part of a community that celebrates learning—both inside and outside the classroom—and to stand beside the incredible educators, organizations, and hometown heroes who make it all possible.
