There’s something special about stepping outside your usual routine as a family. Trying something new—whether it’s a day trip or a full adventure—creates space for laughter, connection, and those “remember when…” moments that stick for years. Sometimes the best memories aren’t perfectly planned… they’re simply the result of saying, “Let’s try it.”
That’s exactly what the Pealer family did.
Looking for a different kind of getaway, they traded the car ride for a rail adventure aboard Amtrak. Their journey began with a 119-mile (about 2-hour) drive from Monroe to Jackson, where they parked their vehicle for just $10 per day before boarding the train to New Orleans.
The Jackson Amtrak station, while carrying a bit of timeworn character, turned out to be part of the experience. The Pealers found it filled with other families and travelers—all there for the same reason: the adventure.

At $65 per person round-trip (during off-peak times), the journey proved to be both affordable and memorable. The Pealers’ train ride lasted approximately 4 hours, with about four stops along the way, giving them a chance to see different communities and enjoy the rhythm of rail travel. They loved the spacious seating and the ability to move freely throughout the train—something you just don’t get on a typical road trip.
One of their favorite features? The observation deck, where seats face outward toward large windows, offers uninterrupted views of the passing scenery. From Mississippi woodlands to charming small towns and the breathtaking stretch across Lake Pontchartrain, the ride itself became part of the destination.

The gentle sway of the train added to the experience—something they personally found relaxing. Still, they noted it’s helpful for families to know there is some movement (as expected on a train), especially for first-time riders.
And perhaps the most exciting part for local families—this kind of experience may soon be even closer to home. With plans for a future Amtrak passenger rail station in Monroe, adventures like this could become a simple hop, skip, and board away.
What to Bring for Your Amtrak Family Adventure
If you’re inspired to try it for yourself, here are a few simple items that can make the journey even more enjoyable:
- A good book (or two): Perfect for relaxing while the scenery rolls by
- A phone or camera: You’ll want to capture those window views and family moments
- Snacks and drinks: Even with onboard options, favorites from home are always a win
- A light blanket or sweater: Trains can feel a little cool, so cozy is key
- Cards or small travel games: Great for screen-free family fun along the way
The Pealer family’s trip is a reminder that sometimes the best adventures don’t require a plane ticket or a packed itinerary—just a willingness to try something new. And with Amtrak travel potentially coming to Monroe, families across Northeast Louisiana may soon create these same kinds of core memories… one journey at a time. 🚆✨
