At Macaroni KID Monroe-West Monroe, we're always on the lookout for important updates that make family life a little easier. From community events and parenting resources to changes that affect your family, our goal is to help you stay informed—so there are no surprises when they matter most. That's why we're sharing an important update for families with teens entering the workforce.
If your teen is planning to get a part-time job this school year, there's an important change you need to know about.
Beginning this summer, Louisiana has updated the way employment certificates (commonly called work permits) are issued for minors. The process is now managed through Louisiana Works, and schools will no longer issue work permits. Instead, employers are responsible for issuing the new Louisiana Works Employment Certificate and verifying a minor's age before employment begins.
What's Changed?
Before:
- Students received their work permits through their school or school district.
Now:
- Employers complete the new Louisiana Works Employment Certificate.
- Employers verify the minor's age using acceptable documentation.
- Schools are no longer part of the work permit process.
What Parents Should Do
If your teen is between 14 and 17 years old and is applying for a job:
- Let the employer know that Louisiana has a new work permit process.
- Be prepared to provide proof of your child's age, such as a birth certificate, state ID, or other accepted documentation if requested.
- Complete any parent or guardian information required by the employer.
Important Deadline
Schools will lose access to the Louisiana Works Employment Certificate System on July 24, 2026, so families should expect employers—not school offices—to handle the process going forward.
