To play hockey, you’ve got to be able to ice skate and have access to an ice rink. Did you know, the Monroe Civic Center Arena floor is now covered with ice? Yes, we now have an ice rink in the Monroe Civic Center Arena!

How did they do that?

They freeze the concrete floor using special equipment and then put a barrier around the frozen area of the floor (making a giant bowl). Next, they gently spray a thin layer of water onto the floor, which quickly becomes ice. They do this several times, and after a few layers of ice, they put down white boards and respray water to make more thin layers of ice. Then comes the painting to make the ice rink and hockey rink, then, you guessed it, more thin layers of water until finally, they have completed the process. Do you think it's cold in the Monroe Civic Center Arena? If you guessed yes, you are right!

WHAT IS A HOCKEY RINK?

A hockey rink is where all of the action happens! Here's a simple breakdown:

  • Center Ice (Center Circle): This is where the game starts! After each goal, the puck is dropped here for another faceoff.
  • Faceoff Circles: These are like special starting spots where players face off to fight for the puck. There are four of them in the corners, and the one in the middle is for the game start.
  • Blue Lines: These lines divide the rink into three parts: your team’s zone, the other team’s zone, and the middle. Crossing the blue line into the other team’s zone means you’re on the attack!
  • Goal Crease: This is the goalie’s space. It’s a blue area in front of the net, where the goalie does their best to block the puck.
  • Penalty Boxes: If you break a rule, you sit here for a time-out. It’s like a little ‘naughty corner’ on the rink!

Fun Fact: Some of the greatest hockey players have scored hundreds of goals in their careers!

HOCKEY BASICS (SCORING AND RULES)

The goal of hockey is simple: Score more goals than the other team! Scoring a goal is the most exciting part of hockey!

Here are some ways to score:
Slap Shot: A powerful shot taken with a wind-up.
Wrist Shot: A quick, accurate shot with a flick of the wrist.
Tip-In: When a player redirects the puck into the net with their stick.

Here are some basic rules to know:
Offside: A player cannot enter the opponent's zone before the puck does.
Icing: When a player shoots the puck down the ice and it crosses the opponent's goal line without being touched.
Penalties: If a player breaks the rules, they may have to sit in the penalty box!

Hockey is an exciting and fast-paced game, and sometimes players get wild about winning! This can lead to some pushing and shoving, and occasionally, players might even have a little fight. While it’s all part of the game, remember that it’s meant to be fun and competitive. The players usually shake hands after, and the game goes on. So, if you see this during the game, don’t worry—it’s just part of the excitement of hockey!

Fun Fact: Did you know goalies can make incredible saves with just their pads?

POSITIONS ON THE TEAM

Forwards: Position the center at the faceoff circle in their attacking zone. The left winger should be on the left side, and the right winger on the right side of the ice. They can move up and down the ice as needed.
Wingers: They stick to the sides and help score goals!
Center: They play in the middle and help with offense and defense.
Defensemen: These players protect the goal and stop the other team from scoring.
Goalie: The hero of the game! They wear extra padding and try to keep the puck out of the net.

GAME DAY TIPS

  • 🧣 Bundle up! The ice makes it chilly inside. Check out Moccasin merch available in both adult and kids’ sizes.
  • 💳 Payments: The Monroe Civic Center is cashless, but some vendors still accept or require cash. Bring both cash and a card.
  • 🏒 Puck Clean-Up Crew: Kids can help pick up pucks after the puck throw. Register your child before the game to get a wristband (available at the far end of the rink).
  • 🎯 Puck Throw Game: Kids can purchase a rubber puck to toss onto the ice at a designated time. Closest puck to the target wins a prize!
  • 🚗 Parking: Parking is free, but spaces are limited. Arrive early for the best spot.
  • ⚠️ Safety First: Stay alert and seated when the puck is in play—it can fly into the stands. For extra caution, kids may wear bike helmets or other protective gear.
