Mayor Jamie Mayo and the Monroe City Council are pleased to announce the application period for our six week long 2017 City of Monroe Youth Summer Job Program will begin on Monday, March 27th.
Mayor Jamie Mayo says, “We are proud to be able to make a difference in the lives of at least 200 young men and women. For some, this will be their first job. Our goal is to give them valuable on the job experiences that will help prepare them for the workforce. It helps that they will earn some cash that can be used to purchase school clothes, supplies, or even their first car. The members of the city council and I are proud that the City of Monroe is in a position to help prepare these young people for the future.”
Below is a brief summary of these summer job programs.
Students and parents are to be reminded that turning in an application does not guarantee a job. Applicants must be enrolled in OR a 2017 graduate from high school, college, or technical/trade school. It is also mandatory that all applicants attach a copy of their latest report card with their job application. There are no exceptions to this rule.
CDBG – summer youth employment program is financed through the City of Monroe’s Entitlement Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Those working in this program are placed in a variety of city offices and departments. This particular program is among those President Trump is proposing to eliminate in his 2018 federal budget. Please help us relay the importance of this program to all of our federal elected officials. These funds are received from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. Since federal funds are used for this program, it has household income requirements which can be found in the advertisement within this paper OR on our website: www.monroela.us Age Range (16 to 21). Applications accepted 9 am until 11:30 am AND 1 pm until 4 pm March 27th thru March 30th at Henrietta Johnson Community Center 2800 Berg Jones Lane (ONLY).
Green Team – allows our youth to earn a paycheck while playing a valuable role in how our city looks. This program focuses on citywide beautification projects. You must be an energetic, able to work with a team, and in heat of the Louisiana sun. The majority of workplace activities take place outside. Age Range (16 to 24). Applications accepted 8 am until 5 pm March 27th thru May 5th at Monroe City Hall.
Community Affairs - involves assisting supervisors who are working with younger children participating in our Parks & Recreation summer programs at city community centers. This involves indoor and outdoor activities, maintenance and various projects. You must be energetic, patient, able and willing to work with children. Age Range (16 to 24). Applications accepted 8 am until 5 pm March 27 thru May 5 at Benoit Community Center, 1700 Oaklawn Drive.
Lifeguards – are hired each summer to keep swimmers safe and project a positive environment at our two public swimming pools. Qualifications include CPR certification for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen. Age Range (16 to 24). Applications accepted 12:30 pm until 5 pm March 27 thru May 5 at Benoit Community Center, 1700 Oaklawn Drive.
